  2. I'd say go for it, right off the bat. However, there are several low powered units like this on the market. Most are meant for used cars lots, real estate usage, or highway info. In my research the rangemaster am1000 is the highest quality unit out there capable of providing the most range. You have full control over all aspects of tuning the unit from the inside - wattage, capacitance, audio levels. It is crystal controlled to a channel of choice for stability. It is an outdoor unit able to survive in extreme climates, and very importantly it has an adapter to connect an antenna directly to it. This is important so that one can stay within the Part 15 regulations..."the total length of the transmission line, antenna, and ground lead (if used) shall not exceed 3 meters" On the Ramsey unit, you would have to connect a transmission line from the unit out to an antenna which in most situations would already put you into an illegal position. But in the end, I would encourage any and all experimentation and would love to hear about your results. Sounds cheap so do it!!

  4. There are many FM transmitters, including the camel, that are affordable and seem to work just fine. However, the FM bandwidth in this area is completely full. It is possible to broadcast in between licensed stations, but you risk getting complaints for interfering and being shut down, and clarity and range suffers as well. Moreover, the regulations for low powered AM are less stringent, making it easier to have a larger broadcast range. FM sound quality is obviously superior but for the reasons stated above and more not mentioned, including trying to stay within legal regulations, we have chosen to go the AM route. But once again, we would encourage you and others to take back the airwaves any way you deem fit to do so and broadcast your mind. We will tune in!
